How long does it take?
The length of time varies from student to student, and will depend on how many hours a week you dedicate to your training. The FAA requires a minimum of 40 hours of flight training, but we have found the average student needs about 50-55 hours before they reach the proficiency needed to pass a check-ride with the FAA. If you fly twice a week, you could anticipate earning your license in approximately 4 months.
What are the requirements to get a private pilot's license?
- Minimum age is 16 to "solo" and 17 to get your license.
- The FAA requires a routine medical exam every 2-3 years.
- You must be able to read, speak and understand English.
- You will need to pass a written exam.
- You will need to pass an oral and flight exam administered by the FAA.
- Other requirements may apply if you are not a US citizen.
These costs are based on FAA minimums. The average student will take more flight time to develop the proficiencies needed to pass the FAA check-ride, and should therefore expect to pay for additional flight time of 10-20 hours.
Do I need to take a ground school class?
All pilots are required to have ground instruction. For a majority of our students, ground training is done one-on-one with their flight instructor. Our experience has shown that this approach to ground instruction provides our students with the most thorough training. It also allows the student to progress at his or her own pace. |
My schedule limits the times I can fly - is that a problem?
Not at all. All of your training is done on your schedule, not ours. We are open seven days a week. Whether it's early morning, your lunch time, evenings, or weekends, our instructors are available to train with you.
When can I begin?

Can I rent aircraft after I finish my license?
Yes! The knowledgeable pilots at McCall Aviation will be glad to help you explore the wonderful country of Central Idaho. Advanced instruction is also available for instrument flying, multi-engine aircraft, and backcountry flying. We have 180HP GPS equipped, and IFR capable Cessna 172 that is great for training.
I really want to become a pilot; how do I know if I have what it takes?
